Media companies have sold the same item over and over again.

Oh you own that Movie on Batamax? Why not buy it on VHS?
Now that you have that movie on VHS why not upgrade to Laser Disc? It's much better.
Sorry Laser Disc didn't pan out, you should buy that movie on DVD.
If you want the best quality you should upgrade to Blu-Ray.

Ok stop now what? If you have a copy of the movie that is for the most part lossless audio and video what is next?
I'll tell you, different media. Next time they shall sell us holographic movie cubes. Something easy to loose.
Or worse, just as you mentioned, digital distribution. No not the ability to purchase, download, and keep. It will be a rental only system that uses a set top box like a Blu-Ray player.

Oh wait that is already happening. Check out the Samsung BD1800 Blu-Ray player. It already has the ability to rent movies via netflix and blockbuster.

All new Blu-Ray players have a network connection. They have introduce new features on Blu-Ray discs called Blu-Ray live. You have to have a network connection to use the new features tho. At some point it will become a requirement to have a network connection just to play a disc.

This is what we are heading towards in the disc / digital download wars.

At every turn the movie industry has killed digital copies / players.

Have you ever heard of http://www.kaleidescape.com ? I doubt you ever will. They lost a battle with the media industry. Buy one of there media servers, rip all of your DVDs into it and watch any move from any TV in the house.

Starting price for an entry level system is about $30,000.00
The reason it cost so much is because of the legal fees it has to pay to fight to keep the company open.
If the company ever gets shut down I hope your server never has any troubles or you will have one expensive door stop.

They want you to continue to buy the same thing over and over again either by rental or different formats.

If you own more then one home you are screwed as well. Do you take your complete Disc collection with you between homes? No, most people with that kind of money buy the same disc twice.

There are currently no good media servers on the market because of all this.

As much as I love Apple and its products, the AppleTV is laughable. iTunes movies even in HD form are crap. If you ever get a chance to watch an iTunes movie on a 120" screen you will know what I mean.

Now I know the average person doesn't own a 120" screen but projectors are becoming more and more affordable especially now that some are using LEDs instead of projection lamps.

Personally, if I buy a title in digital form I should be able to watch it on any of my devices at any location at anytime in my life. This is what Apple is trying to introduce to the end user via iTunes.

It's a shame the movie industry doesn't see it that way.

For me I'll continue to buy movies on DVD and rip them. Once someone smarter then me provides a way to rip Blu-Ray discs on a Mac I will do the same with those Discs.

It's a shame the Macintosh OS has no way of dealing with a Blu-Ray disc.

I disagree with your decision to exclude Blu-Ray movie playback Mr Jobs, it's holding back the Macintosh platform.
I understand your desire to push downloadable digital content but it's at the the expense of the end user. I guess until then....

Hello I'm a Mac
Hello I'm a PC

Mac: What are you doing over there PC?
PC: Watching a movie on Blu-Ray. (PC gives Mac the middle finger) No

You can buy a Blu-ray drive and boot into Windows to use it.  You can even use the latest Toast to burn data (and movie, I guess) discs, if you have a capable burner.

Apple would have to pay licensing to include Blu-ray, something they're hoping digital distribution will kill off.  Nobody's seriously holding off from buying a Mac because it doesn't include Blu-ray.  Macs are flying off the shelves, anyway.

I agree, you should be able to purchase a movie and watch it on your Mac, AppleTV, iPhone, iPod Touch, etc. whenever you'd like.  Apple built the infrastructure to support this.  It works great if you ignore the media companies and just do it anyway.

People have already cracked the Blu-ray encryption scheme, and are ripping/encoding movies and posting them online.  I don't even bother with ripping my own movies (and I've got a stack on DVD) - it makes more sense just to download it in better quality than a DVD can handle.  Buy a couple of hard drives, get yourself a Usenet account, and download as many movies as you'd like.

I'm not contributing towards this endless cycle of rebuying my movies, just so the movie companies can stay in business - they can kiss my ass, like the record companies.  I'll do what I want - if they're not willing to sell it to me at a fair price, that's their problem.

Well, just to have a different opinion inside.

I didn't liked it. Pocahontas on stereoids. Somebody in the arts department used too much LSD...

I think a movie needs a story - a good story. Sure a action movie without one can work out. But this one was dull. CGI can't replace a story (I am looking in your direction Dreamworks). And this movie? It was like a commercial for their new CGI Machine. Well a long commercial.

Yes sure it was fun to watch, but like fast food. It's good while eating. After eating to much - I get sick. All those characters were just shells with nothing in it. And those totally crazy african like sing alongs? And this "the biggest car will make me rule"...

Need to watch Brick or Shaun as an antidote.
